I like this documentary, but in and of itself it's also propaganda too. I don't say that that's a bad thing, I think the goals of this documentary are indeed good, but if you want to empower people to fight propaganda, you have to teach them, why propaganda is so successful: because people choose to rely on others to give them objective truth. That my friends, will never happen, the burden of discovering truth is on the individual and if we as a people are to change, we must actively and vigilantly engage in the dialectic and challenge everything that people tells us as truth, even from people who we deem as on our side as well or who have similar self-interests as we do.

    1. Bill

I take issue with your claim that this documentary is also propaganda. The fundamental underpinning of propaganda is deception - communication with intent to deceive or manipulate for an unethical/illegal purpose. This documentary does not meet this requirement to be classified as propaganda. Signed: A 1st Amendment Civil Rights Attorney.

Our neverending quest for more effective, more intelligent, and faster communication of ideas through language and media has also led to an harmonic increase in our ability to deceive. The ability to propogate or communicate false ideas and false philosophies has gone hand in hand with the explosion of knowledge and the scientific understanding of ourselves. I think it ridiculously foolish of us to draw some immaginary spot in the Timeline of Humanity when all of a sudden, equality took hold and the powers that be gave up their prestige. All that we have witnessed is a development of the powers of deception and perception management to the point that we honestly believe the age of Propoganda and rule by a manipulative elite is over and done with. The more I read and discover through the internet, however, the more obvious the ever-present deception is. I am finally starting to understand why so many Greek philosphers spoke of the Immense power of Music and Theatre to control the masses (even though when I first heard this I found the suggestion laughable).

We are taught to believe that Mythology is a thing of the past, an archaic system of control that is no longer necessary because we have outsmarted and outgrown it. Yet it has only evolved to match the times: We ourselves are victims of a false materialistic mythology based on the fundamental deception that I am seperate than YOU. That my self-preservation, and well-being is somehow more important than yours, even though we are both simply a miniscule speck of Awareness witnessing Existence manifest itself through Being.
I think this false philosophy we live under is the Fundamental problem with the world we have created since the 19th century onward, and this documentary really emphasized those points for me.

Excellent film. The key is for more and more people to recognise all the propoganda out there in all its subtleties.

  9. stopropaganda

Excellently presented documentary. However, I would like to bring up the point that social media propaganda is now one of the greatest threats to our democracy. The power of the people as we have seen can be used through social media, but the powers that be are infiltrating it with propaganda (such as the recent viral Kony 2012 video). Our organization, Citizens Against Social Media Propaganda (find us on fb) is very concerned about this and has started a petition (see our website at Stop Social Media Propaganda dot org). This problem is far more serious than we think most people realize.

    1. Sarah Carpenter Shaun Faulkner

Yes propaganda is bad, and as you put it 'social media propaganda is now one of the greatest threats'. But you want people to visit your facebook group so that you can share your own propaganda in an attempt to change the opinions of your audience. Isn't that just the same as what you just claimed to be the greatest threat?

I am not criticising you and I think I understand what you are trying to achieve but you are trying to highlight the dangers of propaganda by using propaganda which is firstly hypocritical and suggests you do not fully comprehend propaganda yourself and there fore your group may not be the best people to try and make such changes.

Propaganda is not one definite thing, it is all sorts of things in many guises. Any thing you read is propaganda as the writer will always be expressing some kind of view and try to get a message across in some manner. Then there is the education system, obviously media, internet, advertising and other psychological tactics like pier pressure, culture, traditions, society, social norms and conformity etc etc. It has so many faces it can be hard to recognise and I personally think that humans did not mature enough morally at the same rate that technology improved. So, the only way to avoid any form of propaganda is just to remove our reliance in technology, take a step back in time and try to develop morally and philosophically before using technology. This doesn't necessarily mean slowing progress, not all technological advances is a sign of progress; for example we have nuclear war, a powerful risk that was non existent before modern technology. We have a dependance on technology that makes us vulnerable to natural disasters as we no longer know how to survive without our modern way of life and then there are just the many small things that appear to be improvements like a tv remote for example seems harmless and good but it just conditions us to be lazy. Chinese culture understands this and it was custom not to lie or sit on comfortable furniture, only hard or wood furniture, to kneel in an uncomfortable position on a hard floor to eat and to not have chairs with back support to force you to use your back to support yourself. Seems minor but when you include everything that has made life easy like cars, microwaves, fast food, internet, tv remotes, elevators and central heating etc you create a soft society that suffers worse than a hardened society in natural disasters. Ease isn't necessarily a improvement, just a change that conditions us to be soft and weak. A bit off topic but the point being, we weren't ready for technology, the western world didn't consider how the general population would become couch potatoes and have children that prefer to play football on a computer console such as the xbox rather than play football outside, kids that don't want to go out and play, read a book or make models. I understand this is not all kids but we all can recognise how people are not the same as out grand parents were. Not in a good way either. Also technology hasn't made people happier, statistics have suggested that our modern well connected networked fast paced life has caused a major increase in depression. The rise of China was monitored as the theory was recognised to late to test in much of the developed western nations. The studies may not be conclusive evidence but it is interesting non the less, it showed an increase in depression and suicide that coincided with their industrial and technological development which was suggested to be a result of the drastic change from a more natural lifestyle to a technological one without the evolutionary changes that one would expect in such a drastic change of life styles.

My point being, we need to ditch some technology so that we can rid ourselves as much of the propaganda as possible which includes people trying to create facebook groups to help, sadly I doubt a facebook group is likely to be able to run a country and solve all of its problems and would there fore be responsible for spreading propaganda lies; these lies may be by accident as uneducated and ill informed people try to spread their groups ideals as well as the inevitable bias. Your groups ideals will not be everyones ideals and any information you spread will be a form of propaganda that may be in the aid of helping but can do as much damage as intentional lies. Just an example of how someone can accidentally spread bad propaganda; I am always told by family and friends that I will catch a cold going out in bad weather and they swear by this perceived fact, and we argue over their mistake as I argue science shows that a cold is a result not of the your getting wet and cold but from a living bacteria that is spread and in fact the spread of the common cold relies on warmth to multiply and cold will actually inhibit it. My friends and family believe they are doing best by me but in fact are trying to use a form of propaganda which is a nonsense old wives tail that was created to control people, to change my opinions. I say this was formed to control people because I remember how my family would use it against me to discourage me from going out in the bad weather which I happen to love.

So just stop using as many forms of propaganda as you can until they simply go bust, don't take other peoples opinions as fact without doing the research yourself; do the research yourself as much as you can and push for the proper education of children. I find it funny how vital politics is and how our government control out lives and really create our freedom or lack of, yet at comprehensive level we did not study politics at all, yet we get religion forced down our throats with a number of other pointless subjects. We need to teach introductory psychology at school as quite a few basic psychology theories show how easily we are manipulated and influenced without our knowledge to do and think how people want us to act and think. Then philosophies also need to be taught with some sociology. Not intensely but enough that people can understand their own flaws and how they are affected by propaganda, pier pressure, social conformity, advertising and god knows how many other things.

    One solution for the problem:
    CRITICAL THINKING

The key to change society is to inform and educate people, especially young children, where conditioning is the most effective.

I was here in London during the summer riots. Lots of young kids aged 12-21 attacked shops and took mostly electronic devices, sports shoes, gadgetry and booze.

    Coincidence or evidence?

Raising our next generation by mass media and consumerism, will definitely create a distorted and disturbed society.
    We are halfway.
We have a chance to reverse this process.
We have to show everybody and especially, young kids, that happiness is not achieved by possession.
That being in control or achieving more and more power or being successful in business/greediness is not the point of life.

A very insightful documentary. Its interesting to see that towards the very end, particularly at 1:34:54 (time in) there is strong relevance to Julian Assange and the work of Wiki Leaks. - ' what we need is more information more freedom more transparency.' And more information about who's manipulating the public mind'

As bleak as this documentary may be I'm optimistic that things are now slowly changing, Time magazine aptly put The Protester as person of the year. Now through media avenues such as youtube and facebook (although not completely transparent) offer some liberation in social and political discourse and sharing information and ideas.

I've recently discovered that almost EVERYTHING we think is a fact is a LIE. It's a scary process to awake from the matrix. One small example is the latest diet fad. Eating 6 times a day is supposed to be good for you LIES. If you eat 6 times a day you will be FAT. We can eat one meal a day, like our ancestors and be skinny and healthy! All these diet fads are a trick to either make you consume more of their product (food) or be unhealthy and need medical care from big pharma. Please people do yourself a favor and question EVERYTHING you take as fact. The id*ot box is not on your side.

    1. sknb

It depends on what you eat. If you eat small snacks of fresh vegetables six times a day and that's all you will not be fat.

But yeah, a lot of those products are crap.

stop consuming, grow your own food, excercise every day instead of chugging down pills, and you will reduce their hold over you.

The answer is freedom!!!! Who said money is power?? Who told us that having things means something? It means nothing except the Belief you put on it. STOP!! And watch and see that fear is only a mirage. Its not real because if you pay attention you will notice that every time you are afraid of something you really never get harmed. You just BELIEVE its harmful. Start by helping someone and pass it on. When we as a people start doing for others and realize that money is really for our comforts and not survival were free. FREEDOM IS A INSIDE JOB AND SO IS SLAVERY!! YOU CHOOSE

    1. Claire

Unfortunately, money does equal power in our current system. Whether you choose to believe that or not, it doesn't change things. For example, you want to. Change the country by running for office, even local government positions cannot be attained unless yo have thr capital to finance your own campaign, hundreds of thousands of dollars, to the tune of multi millions for federal positions. You need money, or connections to people with money to sponsor you. Otherwise you dont aranf a chance. And no amount of positive thinking will change that.

Also, fear mongering propaganda absolutely is used by the media to manipulate and control us, but there are legitimate fears, and thi ng s people should worry about happening right now.

Our government being one of the biggest sources of fear and the propensity to harm us, individually and collectively.
We have decimated our rights and constitution, and gave the government power to detain us without due process. Things like red flag laws and the patriot act are real threats and real issues.. and worthy of consideration and concern.

It is ebb and flow, tidal gravity! It is ecological balance! You are an old man who thinks in terms of nations and peoples. There are no nations. There are no peoples. There are no Russians. There are no Arabs. There are no third worlds. There is no West. There is only one holistic system of systems, one vast and immane, interwoven, interacting, multivariate, multinational dominion of dollars. Petro-dollars, electro-dollars, multi-dollars, reichmarks, rins, rubles, pounds, and shekels. It is the international system of currency which determines the totality of life on this planet. That is the natural order of things today. That is the atomic and subatomic and galactic structure of things today! You get up on your little twenty-one inch screen and howl about America and democracy. There is no America. There is no democracy. There is only IBM, and ITT, and AT&T, and DuPont, Dow, Union Carbide, and Exxon. Those are the nations of the world today. We no longer live in a world of nations and ideologies,The world is a college of corporations, inexorably determined by the immutable bylaws of business. The world is a business,It has been since man crawled out of the slime.

I don't have to tell you things are bad. Everybody knows things are bad. It's a depression. Everybody's out of work or scared of losing their job. The dollar buys a nickel's worth, banks are going bust, shopkeepers keep a gun under the counter. Punks are running wild in the street and there's nobody anywhere who seems to know what to do, and there's no end to it. We know the air is unfit to breathe and our food is unfit to eat, and we sit watching our TV's while some local newscaster tells us that today we had fifteen homicides and sixty-three violent crimes, as if that's the way it's supposed to be. We know things are bad - worse than bad. They're crazy. It's like everything everywhere is going crazy, so we don't go out anymore. We sit in the house, and slowly the world we are living in is getting smaller, and all we say is, 'Please, at least leave us alone in our living rooms. Let me have my toaster and my TV and my steel-belted radials and I won't say anything. Just leave us alone.' Well, I'm not gonna leave you alone. I want you to get mad! I don't want you to protest. I don't want you to riot - I don't want you to write to your congressman because I wouldn't know what to tell you to write. I don't know what to do about the depression and the inflation and the Russians and the crime in the street. All I know is that first you've got to get mad. You've got to say, 'I'm a HUMAN BEING, God damn it! My life has VALUE!'

If you had some knowledge about media, PR, and propaganda, you would easily see that this documentary has some strong subliminal persuasion techniques. Also, this documentary is one-sided and shows a deep lack of information about the difference between propaganda and PR.

    1. Amira Esk

If you watch Adam Curtis' "Century of the Self" you'll learn that the word propaganda was taken out of our regular vocabulary and replaced with public relations in order to remove the stigma that the word carried. They are in fact, the same exact thing. At one time, before the war, the word propaganda was not a "4 letter" word so to speak... it was a common and often used term for getting a point across to a group. This is exactly what public relations is. You can probably find Century of the Self here on this site. I highly recommend it.

    2. Troy Mounie

I think it's no coincidence that the first two letters of propaganda are PR.

  22. Tervaris

I just say woe. They've been lieing to us since before we could comprohend. Woe! The sad part about it is that most people won't wake up, some not getting the chance to, some who don't want to, and as we seen others who are keeping them sedated. If your are not the Slave of the One who gives you life, the abiltiy to breath, blink, touch, taste, cognitive thought, and a universe of natural beauty and spender then you are the Slave of the corparations, fear, man, and desires. These propagandaist make Allah and Islam the enemy to fear when in all actualality it is the solution... but only if you knew. Salam (peace)

    1. matthew kelly

Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man. People smarter than you and I suggest that we are in fact highly evolved animals that came to be without the assistance of a creator. The only reason I'm burning calories writing this is because I find your post to be hypocritical and irritating. If your aim is intellectual enlightenment I suggest you take an inviting look at the Carl Sagan quote: "You can't convince a believer of anything; for their belief is not based on evidence, it's based on a deep seated need to believe."

Sadly, I know of manipulation, and, though it is more often described as being from the Right, this video demonstrates, forcefully, it can be from the Left. Just reviewing the list of contributors lays strength to that claim. Left or Right, I beg to be given, simply, the Truth, without all the manipulation.

  27. Gary V

The first casualty of any war is always the truth.
All governments rely on the fact that the majority of their citizens are stupid enough & gullible enough to believe whatever BS that they are told along with a bit of flag waving. The worst thing is that they are right. They just claim that they are right & that anyone who disagrees is not patriotic. Most people just follow along like sheep, like lambs to the slaughter.

THIS SITE DESPERATELY NEEDS A NEW CATEGORY: "SOLUTIONS" !

Or every documentary website needs one, for that matter... We want to see a doc about SOLUTIONS, not just the problems in the world!

I am with you on that one.
I love documentarys but it gets depressing not knowing what to do about all the things wrong with the world.

Don't you guys ever watch TED? We (as a species) are bursting forth with solutions. See Dan Nocera on Personalized energy and Michael Pawlyn on Using Nature's Genius in Architecture. Even Zeitgeist: Moving Forward in addition to some good baseline information offers some tentative organizational solutions. Psywar goes a long way toward explaining why all the solutions we have aren't being implemented, and there's no easy solution to the problem of an illegitimate government (one that no longer represents the wills of the people).

    3. Tina Yuzilaitis

one word...boycott..dollar vote, its a good start..all the corrupt companies give your money to the little family companies where-ever they are left...boycott corrupt companies like apple and walmart..suffocate the evil corporations..its not like they can FORCE us to buy from them..can they?

    4. Eric Sherping

So you want solutions before you even know fully what the problems are?

one of the big problems IMO with conspiracy and anti-power fanatics is that they are attracted to the negativity as it excites them or they want to hate somebody or be negative. I guess if you want to be part of something more positive you're going to have to find it or make it yourself!

I tend to agree with whatever Chomsky says, however, It's hard to maintain the idea of democratic participation after seeing the hysteria in wal-mart!
What I do agree with (100%) is that we should all work part-time, consume less and enjoy our lives a bit more. Maybe spend time with friends and family, or maybe read books, watch good films, do something creative...

Interesting documentary, but why does this film have background music running through every damn second of it ? American filmmakers really have an uncanny ability to ruin documentaries with a massive "over-use" of music. Most times inappropriatly placed in the film and far too loud running underneath "talking-head" interviews .It must be a cultural thing like "Fox News." Don't you trust the viewer to have an attention span?

I really did want to know what Noam Chomsky and John Manley had to say about the subject...I DIDN'T WANT THEIR WORDS DROWNED OUT!

I managed to get past an hours viewing until at 1.03, the pseudo "red indian" chant music finally killed this film off for me, it all became too much.
I had to stop watching what was admittedly an interesting subject. The terrible "over-use" of music devalued the subject matter and kudos of what the contributors were trying to say and that killed it for me....Which is a shame!

Note to the director/editor...you really need to look at the structure of UK documentaries and their "sparing" use of music. Placed in films as an aid to the film's narrative and not as a distraction to it!

    1. Jack Skye

I agree that the music drowned out some of the speakers words at times, and this was a poor choice stylistically. Why do you assume that the music at 1.03 is a "pseudo "red indian" chant"? It is actually a song by a well known contemporary First Nations artist (Coyote Dance by Robbie Robertson). It is one of the songs in the documentary which I thought was well placed. Few discussions of democracy reference the historical significance of the Haudenasaunee (pardon my spelling if this is incorrect, I only know a little Ojibway and none of the "Iroquoian" languages) confederacy. Fewer still acknowledge contemporary First Nations cultures and cultural creations. While the segment failed to mention that our confederacies still exist as governments (although largely underground/under the radar), I was thankful for the acknowledgment of a contemporary rather than strictly 'traditional' song. That most people can't seem to tell the difference between actual First Nations people and cultural productions and "pseudo chants", when we are the original inhabitants of this land, makes me rather sad.

  36. jiggerj

Great film, shame most Americans will never see it.

I enjoy this documentary, but I don't find it convincing since they mostly substantiate claims about propaganda from past history to doubt our present foreign policy. This is not to doubt whether propaganda exists today, certainly it does exist today, but how it is managed today in contrast to the past would be helpful to understand propaganda.

  39. GoughLewis

Very Interesting film. Shows the psychological control over us "Corks floating on a body of water to be directed" Sheeple, who go with the flow with what ever government bodies or mainstream news outlets (Fox, CNN, BBC, etc.) propaganda to create the tides of opinion and consensus to get us into war or sell us Coca Cola. Time for some critical thinking and discernment people. Highly recommended film. My praise to Top Documentary Film for sharing with us quality films of this caliber. Thank you.

If we are ever to turn around from the downfall we are racing towards, a site like SeeUat Videos may be our greatest help. There are very few sites that are watched and responded to with greater interest and intelligence. If you care to change your world spread the news about what is going on here. Send it to every ONE you know, bar none.
Do it before They shut it down with the hidden reason that it is becoming too influential to the mass. All docs are importants here because they represent freedom of speech but some like this ONE are vital to our own survival.
Not to save a country, a skin colour, a theist or atheist but to help all human beings who once they know the truth will inevitably change them self!
Post, E-mail,Copy, Send, Show, Tell...don't make it your lonely journal at home, make it carry your voice way beyond the walls of your home.
Thank you Vlatko...i don't think you even know what you did when you started this.
God or not you were inspired by something bigger than you know!

I will have to admit that throughout most of this documentary my ire was raised. I was expecting some Marx, Engels or Hegelian diatribe as a solution for the world’s problems. I was pleasantly surprised by the conclusion, Metanoia. That’s quite a switch from the standard documentary of this genre, as Pogo would state, “I have seen the enemy and it is us”.

    1. Mad

Yes I agree certain forms of Marxism are the key solution to saving humanity, for example the workplace democracy is a golden idea, how nice would it be to make the same amount as your boss as an assembly line worker? Or have a democracy that is comparable to the Iroquois tribe the way Engels describes it? I think a libertarian approach to socialism would be the only acceptable form in this day and age as long as it was renamed something else because the word socialism brings up some dark imagery with westerners. However I think if people study Marx & compare what he wrote about capitalism in this day and age they would realize the system is set up to fail, America = suicide capitalism.

An interesting thought and important fact about Stalin and Mao: they were funded and supported by Wall Street. Morgan, Rockefeller, and the Wall Street financiers funded and supported the Russian Revolution. Leon Trotsky was given $20 million in gold by the banker Jacob Schiff to help finance the revolution. Lenin was provided a free pass to travel across Europe with the help of Max Warburg, head of the Rothschild-affiliated Warburg bank. He was put in a sealed railway car with over $5 million in gold from the German government and upon reaching Petrograd was joined by Stalin and Trotsky.

“The course of Russian history has, indeed, been greatly affected by the operations of international bankers,” Rep. Louis T. McFadden, chairman of the House Banking and Currency Committee throughout the 1920-30s, explained. “The Soviet Government has been given United States Treasury funds by the Federal Reserve Board… acting through the Chase Bank.”

“Whatever the price of the Chinese Revolution, it has obviously succeeded not only in producing more efficient and dedicated administration, but also in fostering high morale and community of purpose. The social experiment in China under Chairman Mao’s leadership is one of the most important and successful in human history,” said David Rockefeller in 1973, years after Mao exterminated around 70 million people.

It would seem a “capitalist” like Rockefeller would be opposed to Mao and communism. Gary Allen explains: “If one understands that socialism is not a share-the-wealth program, but is in reality a method to consolidate and control the wealth, then the seeming paradox of super-rich men promoting socialism becomes no paradox at all. Instead, it becomes logical, even the perfect tool of power-seeking megalomaniacs,” writes Allen. “Communism or more accurately, socialism, is not a movement of the downtrodden masses, but of the economic elite.”

      @Gough Lewis
While I agree with & already knew most of what you said none of that actually has to do with Karl Marx or communism, CHINA is NOT communist, they are fascists wearing socialist mask. Soviet Union didn't work because it was never going to work out in the first place, Trotsky was once asked where is the best place for Communism & he said America. Russia & its neighbors were poor, backwards countries with a lot of fixing up to do and a lot of atrocities had been done. But when you boil it all down the # 1 killer of the world is the US, we have more of our own citizens in prison than any country on this planet not to mention the grand canyon of wealth inequality between the rich & the poor. You obviously just anti-communist troll repeating the same jargon most critics have of an ideology they know little of. True Communism is a dictatorship of ideology & it has to be for it to work, if your neighbors don't want to help you out & likewise your village will starve to death. Right now Americans live in a semi-fascist plutocracy & the anti-communist propaganda sheets have been pulled over your eyes to blind from the hard facts on the ground, which is MASSIVE suffering & homelessness. Search Iroquois democracy & tell me their system wasn't better than Americans corrupt banana republic style misrepresentation. Also like to add and I am anti-Stalinist & a strong critic of Maoism as well. Oh & the reasoning behind some of this mysterious funding you speak of is relatively simple: Your Wall Street slavers/owners LOVE Socialism! The elites just don't want to share any of it with you, they also financed the largest propaganda racket in the history of humanity targeting the united sheep of America.

I think you meant "Americans", not Westerners.

Mad, I think you meant to say "Americans", not westerners.

Metanoia? I think you're stretching the conclusion of this documentary a bit. The documentary mostly leaves the solution as awareness; i.e, if subjects become aware of the tactics of propaganda used against them, they'd be less susceptible to its effects. That's a far cry from the self-flagellation indicated by metanoia.

I think we're already suffering from the metanoic effects of the propaganda employed against us. However, instead of changing our minds, we're medicating the ensuing cognitive dissonance.

This is a great film! I was initially a little sceptical of its sensationalist style, but as I watched more I became really glad that someone was articulating what has been troubling me for some years now.

Adding "Human resources" (also by Metanoia films) is a must.

Thank you for posting this excellent documentary Vlatko, this is one of my all time favorites on this topic because it shows the roots of a lot of these problems affecting our lives daily. I'll be sending a more requests in the future, I think its crucial to know your history if your going to even attempt changing the future. Propaganda is wonderful thing that has been horribly misused for all the wrong reasons throughout history, this is the reasoning behind the sophistication of our propaganda system in the west. Hopefully people will watch this and join the fight in these information wars exposing propagandists & private interests wherever they hide.
