The only person who actually talked about music from a musician's point of view profoundly was Anushka Shankar. Other musicians featured in this video were mostly talking about their training journeys and their production processes, but not why they do what they do, which was the intention of the video. They should have talked more about why they play and what they get out of it.

The electronic duo and the percussionist were the other two who talked about music from their point of view (as musicians) at some depth. The electronic duo talking about the university-educated musician who had lost his way, but later worked with them in a free-from-dictate position, said something about the friction between music as a discipline and music as a very personal and internally creative, spiritual (and/or motivational) companion. Anushka also touched on that when she talked about the technical musical virtuosos and the spiritual musical journeymen.

Mastery of technique, can itself, be motivation for some as the classical guitar player revealed. He talked about a competition of sorts between the young and old guys in his quartet, driving him to practice more, but didn't talk about why he played at all at a personal level. There are great virtuosos who write excellent songs also. Joe Satriani, the Rock Guitar Instrumentalist, is a great master of the instrument - a virtuoso - but also a great song writer. He can write songs that make you jump, mellow down, feel blue, get ecstatic, become soulful and feel spiritual.

I suppose there are those who are just musicians and those who are "artists". Mastery of technique and music knowledge are a must, but creating something meaningful (for oneself and others) is what separates the artist from the musician.

Great video to watch. Thanks for putting it here!

Anoushka is the daughter of Ravi Shankar, and half-sister to Norah Jones. Perhaps they tell you that, but I wanted to be sure you knew.
