It's been called world's oldest profession yet it's always been taboo - prostitution. Around the world the sex industry presents many faces. From the violent sex slums of Bangladesh, to the deadly sidewalks of the United States. From the stylish bordellos of Australia, to Europe where the disabled pay for sex, and where man are videotaped in futuristic cyber-brothels. Step into the forbidden world of sex for sale. Those who sell sex, whether male or female, are shunned and labeled as whores or hookers.

Those who buy it are seen as sleazy and immoral. But does prostitution change its nature when it steps from the third world to the first, or are violence, drug abuse and disease global realities? When street pimps give away to legal brothels, is prostitution destigmatized? And when sex is sold as a service to the disabled does it become legitimate? As old as the hills, but forever changing, prostitution takes more forms than ever before. But are they all still taboo?

On the banks of the river Padma, in Bangladesh, Maya stares across the water toward her former home, the city of Dhaka. This mighty river symbolizes Maya's separation from her family and her past life. It reminds her that she can never return for she is a prostitute. Maya is trapped in a sprawling brothel town called Daulatdia - a modern day Sodom and Gomorrah. Trucks, laden with goods for Dhaka, line up for days waiting to cross the river. This giant traffic jam spawned Daulatdia, a roadside sex slum of over 2000 shacks, each housing a prostitute. The women there service thousands of men a day, for two to four dollars at a time.

In a country where nearly sixty million people live on a less than a dollar a day, many women see prostitution as an economic necessity. In fact the law allows unemployed women over eighteen to apply for permission to work as a prostitute. Although legal, Bangladeshi society still treats these women as outcasts. Prostitution is closely related to the notion of two concepts called "purity" and "pollution" which originally come from Hindu culture. Hindus form the second largest religious group in Bangladesh. Whatever her religion, when a woman turns to prostitution she becomes forever tainted.

I was just curious who is the director for this film.

  2. call me anna

My sister is a sex seller, she has a job every week and it pays well for her. YUCK!YUCK!YUCK! Don't ever do it, I'm 20 and I did it once! EEEWWWWWWW!!!

  3. dpk

In this monetary world, everyone pay to money for money....

  4. Michael

Why does the narrator keep saying of the high-end prostitute being interviewed that she "claims" to like her work, so as to lay doubt?

  5. Destiny

In a sense America has legalized prostitution- pornography. We pay them to have sex, the only difference is that not all are recorded. As a female, I believe that it should be legal and we could apply for a work certificate like we would do a CDL.

  6. UMac40

Story of my life right here.

  7. BlackRoseOfMercy

Sex is good? Sex is great? Sex is gross! I don't see the point in it.

    1. Jj

You prolly don't get any is why you don't see the point lol reproduction

  8. Bryan

Why can't I have that job,?!!I would love to have sex for a living...it's every guys dream...I don't know why woman hate it so much while men would love it. Must be a biological thing, maybe having the X chromosome makes you not like casual sex, while the Y chromosome makes you love having sex xdd

    1. bringmeredwine

      Yes, sex is fantastic!
But how many Johns are oooglie or just plain weird? Women get killed or maimed by their Johns.
I couldn't do it, too picky and plain paranoid.

    2. Manuel Marshall

What if the Jane was actually a john (MAN) would you still be excited? These women do not have any choice. They were sold into being sex slaves. Suppose you were sold into sex slavery for a population of Gay men. Would you still be so eager to have sex. It's not so good when the rabbit has the gun and your the prey on the run! Just saying!

    3. Barbara

Sex is fun, but what you need to understand is that many of these prostitutes suffer regular violence and were forced into prostitution at young ages. That's not something you want. Furthermore, yes, let's not ignore biology here. Only women can get pregnant, and even with contraceptive measures women risk pregnancy every single time they have sex until they are no longer physically capable of being pregnant. It's not at all fun living with that worry. It is also easier for women to contract STDs than it is for men, so that is another concern. It is also hard for men to get hurt during the actual act of sex, whereas it is very painful for most women the first time they do so. When a guy and girl lose their virginity together, for example, the guy is typically ecstatic while the girl is just focusing on getting through the pain of her hymen being torn and her vaginal canal being stretched out. With prostitutes, this first-time pain is usually much worse, since the johns typically are rougher and care primarily about their own pleasure. Even after a prostitute has become experienced, a guy with a bigger penis can still hurt pretty bad. Many prostitutes are also raped frequently, so they endure that pain as well.

So, look at all the facts before you make such idiotic statements.

    4. Bryan

idiotic statement? It is not idiotic. I just said that I would like the job xdd, and I was joking more than anything. What you say is right, but the main reason is the kid thing. Girls end up with the kid, not men so girls have to choose carefully  who they have sex with. That is why they feel bad when they think they are sluts, it's 1000000 of years of evolution that make girls do what they do. it is not about pain, I mean...lions when they do it the female feels a lot more pain because the lions pines has sharp pricks to get rid of sperm that could have been introduced by another male. Woman don't feel bad about getting raped because of the pain, it's the emotional pain more than anything. With my girlfriend she liked it when I hit her while we had sex, physical pain can even feel good if the right emotion is there, but if it is not....it could be the girls worst day of her life.  But you are right, what I said is a bit s*upid...but I was joking around, I know the reason why guys pay for sex and why girls have to put up with it. if we carried the child like sea-horses, there would be more documentaries about male prostitution. Girls want men to have kids, men want girls to have sex, that is was drives the sex industry.

People who take money for using their bodies...well, what are they actually doing? They are betraying their own bodies.
Selling them like a commodity to be used, often abused and put aside when not needed.
They have no respect toward their bodies. Call it prostitution or whatever...

  10. Corzillla

o dont necessarily agree with a women selling herself but id rather see a willing women sleep with a potential rapist or serial rapist if it meant saving someone a life full of pain.

The reality of it is. If we relied on our instincts. We would be f--king every human being we can. I think alot of us modernized people attach more meaning to sex than need be. Its a pleasurable expierence. Im not saying people should pay for sex. But the practice of having many partners is not as bad as you are making it seem. I think the real problem here is that every human being wishes to be a completely free individual. And being in a comittied relationship doesnt allow that. Which is why the most loving couple whom have families togethet still choose to participate in such acts. Not be becauze in their head they are like ya. I dont give a f--k about my wife and family, but because it threatns a core value. Freedom.

    1. Manfruss

There are some interesting studies on poly amorous and monogamous relationships. Certain pros and cons for both, take your pick. Personally, I think there is greater risk with polyamory over monogamy, and certainly not much greater advantage. Depending on what you are looking for, each person is different.

  12. Andi Mack

what bothers me the most, is that there is such focus on how immoral the women are who get paid for sex, but no one ever REALLY talks about the morality of the men who pay. We hear a lot that its an unsafe profession, yeah it is, not because the work itself is dangerous, but because the workers are forced to work in the shadows of society, and we force them to. We force this ridiculous social stigma onto them, and don't give them any where to go for help if they need it. Even in this documentary they say some people "claim" to enjoy it. No one ever says that *insert traditional profession here* "claims" to enjoy their work. If she says she enjoys it, she probably does. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a women enjoying sex, whether she's paid for it or not.

Personally, as long as the parties involved are ADULTS, I don't have an issue with prostitution (which where I live is legal, but the activities around it are illegal - having a brothel, soliciting etc). It's the trafficking and child abuse that concern me. Along with this, I don't consider it abuse if the adult woman chooses this as a career and consents. I honestly don't see that as any different than me paying a plumber to fix my sink. Money for a service. Although I have strong opinions about this, I'm not entirely sure how to fix it and make it safer. I don't know how much good legalizing it would do, because there is still such a social stigma.

    1. John Flavin

Exactly my thoughts. The narrator really annoyed me by saying that some sex workers 'claimed' to enjoy their work. Why couldn't he just say some sex workers enjoy their work? This programme itself reinforces the stigma placed on sex workers by society.

  13. Rocky Racoon

All human needs are commodified that is what I hate about it all. When a human need is withheld for any reason I think it is immoral.

  14. 1concept1

I see nothing wrong with selling sex? And if your going to throw morality at me i refer you to Barbara Walters comment to Woody Allen:, "Woody do you consider sex dirty"? To which he replied: "If your doing it right it is".

    1. bionicwoman

      .
This is not what this docu is about. It's about children and young women without resources for basic survival being taken advantage and also being used for trafficking drugs and guns. It's about babies, young children being sold for sex. It's about young boys being sold for sex. It's about old dirty a** men having sex with children whether the child consents or not, it's wrong, sad and it's disgusting. Now if you want to buy sex buy it from a mature, responsible consenting adult and use a condom!

    2. rainmaker

I haven't seen the film yet - wanted to check comments first.

But it seems that either (A) you are wrong by focusing on the sex exploitation / abuse part without much consideration on the general idea of prostitution, or (B) the documentary actually talks about and focuses on the sex exploitation / abuse part of prostitution business. I think it's A, because 90% of your comment is about pedophilia, and the film cover features 2 young adults.

The bottom line is (and you cannot seriously argue with it): if a person makes his/her own decision to be involved in prostitution business, then there is nothing wrong with it. In poor countries, this saves lives of many families that are unable to finance their life through low conventional salaries. If a person has to do it against her/his will, then this is criminal and has to be stopped. Period.

    3. 1concept1

I am not for the abuse of children in anyway. So sorry if i upset anyone.

    4. Bungaroosh

'Doing it right' for Woody Allen was doing it with his wife's daughter.

    5. 1concept1

      But not his daughter, right?

    6. Bungaroosh

Well, actually, Mia Farrow also accused him of molesting their 7-year old daughter and although he was not prosecuted for this, his wife was granted full custody of the child. Dirty sounds about right.

    7. 1concept1

there are as many dirty old women as there are dirty old men. So lets get off the subject. I can give you two personal accounts of being molested by woman when i was a young boy! but its not necessary because we all know that it's different when a woman does it then if a man does it?

And the fact that "mia Farrow also accused him of molesting their 7year old daughter doesn't mean he did it. The other one he wasn't related to. So lets just drop the subject. No more he said she said you said and the rest of the BS!

    8. Alex

For the human species sex is more than just a form of procreation. It's often a way to display strong feelings for your lover. It's wrong to encourage others to use their body for money. And a large proportion of those who pay for sex are already in a relationship.

The only time I think someone is not totally immoral in paying for sex is when they are disabled or have problems with dating etc. But those are purely because we live in a world where we judge based on what people look like or can or can't do.

  15. matt van den ham

Remember kids, prostitution is illegal, so be sure to have a camera on hand to make a porn.

  16. Guest

    "Thousands of men a day"
    A theoretical impossibility.
Thousands mean at least, bare minimum, 2000.
Lets say they work 16 hours a day, leaving 8 to sleep and eat. The absolute most anyone could do.

That means that every sexual act would need to take less than 30 seconds, and 0 seconds is spent in between customers.

Also, these women would then be set for life. One day would generate enough income to live for the next few decades, quite well.

Even if these women only do a few dozen a day they would be doing well, which is probably around how many they actually do.

    1. Jack1952

I think they meant that 2000 women do thousands a day in total. If each woman has, on average, five customers, that would be ten thousand in total. This may be, in fact, a conservative number.

    2. Vlatko

It says "The women there service thousands of men a day", not "each woman there services thousands of men a day."
