God's Next Army
God's Next Army investigates Patrick Henry College (PHC), set up five years ago in Virginia, near Washington DC. Its mission is to train young fundamentalist Christians to become the next generation of America's cultural and political leaders. Though the separation of church and state is enshrined in the US Constitution, with financial backing from the evangelical community the college aims to rechristianise America; to preserve the world from the sinfulness of man.
PHC students are an isolated group who come from close-knit communities where everyone prays together and shares moral certainties. Most have been educated at home and have had no contact with either the social diversity or the political and intellectual cut and thrust of mainstream schools. Derek Archer, a prospective PHC student believes home - schooling has protected him from the 'moral decay of the world'.
Once at the college, the students ceremonially sign a covenant which commits them to a strict behaviour code: no alcohol, drugs or obscene literature; sex will be reserved for marriage; personal conflicts will be resolved biblically; the students will be above reproach, will uphold the tenets of evangelical Christianity and lead the nation for Christ.
Religion is the ruin of the USA. This documentary is a lie. The Bible is book of myth not truth. These students in this video are home schooled so they are lacking the most important part of education. An educated person always asks questions about everything. Yes that includes the BIBLE and the adults that tell you what to believe. This video is a lie.

While not a very balanced investigation of the college (see how majors issues are addressed and classified which wouldn't be found in a liberal college review) radical socialists democrats did the same thing in the 60's and 70's which gave us Obama and Clinton, so this is just the other side of the same coin

No, not to my mind, but I'm not sure what 'balance' you're referring to. Let's say that 'there is no God' is the default position, since no measurable evidence of God's 'Being' has been produced. Science requires that 'existence', or Being, to be measurable and to permit corroboration, such as our being consists of atoms and molecules and blood, sweat and hairs that can be weighed and measured. But everything about 'God' is unseen, and thus unmeasurable, and thus no one can agree upon anything in religion.

this video is quite disturbing. I am Christian but to see fellow Christian's faith get twisted and turned to the undisguised horror I see before me is unforgivable. However topics like this effect the world, due to the influence the USA has on world politics. What are these kids going to do when they (hopefully) discover that the earth is actually about 4,500 million years old (and I'm not even talking about evolution)? A waste of time if you ask me, the college is. To focus your efforts strictly on politics and religion in this country is not only contradictory but also impractical. Nobody's gonna vote for people like this. They're narrow-minded, intolerant, and aren't independent in thought. Behind each smiling face I see a person who deeply wishes he or she could experience all that life has to offer. I feel bad for these kids. If one of them gets elected president count on another war overseas somewhere that doesn't fit into their idea of a christian world. first it's "we want a christian nation" and next it'll be "we want a christian world".

You reminded me of an afternoon when i was fairly young. I opened the door to a "Jehovah Witnesses" couple who came in preaching their sense. They had nothing to say about themself other than words picked in a old book. Sad. And they left with the money of my piggy bank, mostly pennies. My mom was furious when she returned.

"Karen Fontana"-- what do you think 'the bible' is? And who do you believe is responsible for the writing? The bible is not even by definition a 'book'. It is a collective narrative comprised of many types of representations--myths, oral traditions, poems, letters, prose, stories, accounts. A large collection include letters possibly written by Paul (although no time to address it here, there is much evidence Paul is not the author, though credited--as is evidence Moses did not himself author). Had Paul (we will assume for the sake of argument) EVER known these letters of 'suggestions' of improvement to church sects would one day be used to justify all that went forth in the name of conversion, war, persecution, condemnation, imprisionment, capital punishment, and discrimination, he would have been much more precise in his words. Because the bible is composed of myth, prose, poetry, letters--it must be interpreted according not to what you think it 'says' but what does it read given the type of writing, the time frame, the purpose of that particular piece, the politices and culture of the time period, etc. There are countless additional determining factors. First, consider that these stories of Jesus were first circulated among the surviving Jews at the time as ORAL TRADITION. The first accounts of Jesus were not written down until decades after his death, so what we have are not eye witness reports to read literally as one would an accident report just having witnessed. Second, the writings whether it be prose, poetry, etc., were translated several times and copied by scribes who were commissioned by those in the political seat of power at the time of the commissioned transcriptions. And just as in politics as we know it today, whoever was in power influenced the message to the order of his liking. And what of the so called banned books of the bible? Yes, there were more accounts, many more not included, not deemed fit for inclusion. This begs the question, why were some accounts included and others not; who rose to the seat to decide the standard; who enforced and advanced this position of censorship among the highest fashion; what was gained by such censorship; what was lost; and who lost above all (i.e., who did it profit the most, who did it hurt to the greatest degree)? It is a sweet dream to think of a god that thought of you, Karen, as such a favorite creation that he would create you, build your Earth, provide you with a divine written guide to the galaxy and remain just a holla' away when you needed something. But, alas, it is not quite as cut and dry. And, if you are a Christain, don't you owe it to yourself and Christ's legacy to dig deeper into his message of life, separating and sifting Christ's message from the politics, divisions, misinterpretations of text, mistakes of transcription, bias of translators and scribes? The universe is a big place. Large enough I think for both science and religion to occupy the same cage. Expansive enough I think for critical thinking and faith to coexhist. I challenge you to explore more. Read: the works of Peter Gomes (Harvard theologian), John Shelby Spong (Bishop of Newark--retired), anything by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and "The Suicide of Christian Theology". Watch the documentaries "Banned from the Bible", "A Fish out of Water", "For the Bible Tells Me So", "A Flock of Dodo's", "Religulous", "God in America". This just touches the surface, and I am sure you will not take any of these suggestions--but I must submit them to you. I wondered this too. Then I found an essay by a Christian. He explains that God reveals himself through his creation. So even if you live in the deepest jungle and never heard of Jesus or saw a cross, you can still sincerely wish to know God in your heart. If you do, then God will send missionaries to get to you. If they don't get to you, you weren't sincere and deserve to go to hell. This apparently includes infants. What reasoning. If you never heard of Jesus in your jungle, it's your own fault.

I would like the first few lines that you read to tell you I do have a belief. It may seem like I'm trying to get at you but truly I'm concerned about the number of heads turning away from a belief system all together.

The phrase 'religion and politics should never be disgust at the dinner table' is there for a reason... When I was young I asked a vicar how can I know if god exists to which he replied. ''You can't, that's why you have to have faith... if god wanted you to know he would tell you''. Religion is no different than a political ideology. Some people use it as an excuse to do horrible things and some people use it to spread goodwill. All religions, just like all political ideologies, are neither good nor bad collectively.
The problem with religion is that it's not f--king true and it leads to expected behavior based upon the perceived will of an imaginary friend. Sometimes good, sometimes bad but always based upon false information.
I heard Richard Dawkins say this in a doc he made. He was quoting, I believe physicist, after interviewing a man whose religious friend was imprisoned for the murder of an abortionist.

the physicist who said the quote is Steven Weinberg, a Nobel-prize winning scientist and atheist. he is interviewed by Jonathan Miller in The Atheism Tapes and is a really cool guy, very smart and with a terrific sensayuma.
I do not see how PH could have become accredited, as it goes against everything that education and scholarship stand for. From what I have read about the institution, especially the article on Wikipedia, it seems that its status is more the result of politic connections than excellence.
I wonder about the caliber of, for example, its biology classes taught from a creationist (read non-scientific) point of view and for that matter, the quality and qualifications of its professors who sign an oath of allegiance to Christianity and the Bible. On the other hand, I learned from Wikipedia that a number of them have recently left in protest against the policies of PH, but that these have been quickly replaced by other hacks.
I wonder if the college offers any courses in biblical history (scholarship) to counteract the continuous stream of religious drivel.
I wonder how mathematics is taught, when the concept of the infinite goes against most evangelical (creationist) teachings

A note to others: Not all homeschooled kids are like this. Not every one of us ends up a religious wacko, whether or not our parents try to make us into one. We all have different reasons for why we were homeschooled: Mine was that the public schools in my area did not meet my parents' expectations as far as quality education and good teachers (both in their teaching and the way they deal with their students), so they homeschooled me. Religion didn't even become a factor until later on, which is another story. Point being, I find the view that the narration and the homeschoolers themselves take on homeschooling a bit more slanted than it ought to be. Just my humble opinion.
Ugh. Used to be friends with someone who ended up at PHC...he turned out to be such a snake! He wants to be a politician, go figure! We were both homeschooled, and couldn't be more different, nowadays! I hope to transfer to Berkeley someday, and he ended up at PHC...some days, I can't believe we were ever friends. I guess I'm glad he found a place for nuts like himself. Good riddance, I don't have to deal with him anymore, and soon, won't have to deal with any more fundies, if I can help it!

I couldn't help but notice how lovely and hopeful these kids seem to be...and how repressed they seem to be as well. It surely is the weight of constant self-scrutiny and purgative confession that results in such a dampening effect on those so young. It almost seems to me like a form of “experiential bulimia”---gorging on forbidden behaviors and then vomitting it all back up along with undigested chunks of ‘mea culpas’. Of course, it is precisely during this exuberant, curious period of young adulthood when life and spontanaeity should BE IRREPRESSIBLE. So I’m saddened that fundamentalist, Uber-Christian parents are robbing the life passage of youth from their own children. They are a cult of disfunctional zealots bent on reaching a personal paradise and unconcerned about what or who [including their own children] gets destroyed in that quest. "my Kingdom is not of this world"( Jesus Christ, AD 0031") was the response to those who wanted Christ to do exactly what PHC is attempting to do--and in Christs' name.

I see nothing in scripture to suggest that individual Christians, apart from the Church, are to conspire ways and means to eventually become the salt and light-or to completely skip over that part and implement a faster and more effective means of providing the attributes of Salt and Light-which is the pattern I detect. It's like an electrical short-circuit--whether by accident or intent, the result of a "short-circuit" can be tragic and the result of PHC and its future is out of line with the intent of Christianity--and it doesn't matter how sincere everyone is or appears to be. Anyone can be grossly wrong and entirely sincere at the same time.
Within a hundred years I expect PHC will either be no different from what any other ivy league college presently is. They might be packaged differently and there will be divisions, disputes and splits throughout its history.
If that doesn't occur its history will be very short. That's the example provided by history.

I think it's interesting to note that if any one group of people, training their children to take hold of the reins of power en masse, held the belief that, say, George Bush's word was ultimate and irrefutable and that it was their duty to come to power and enforce his will on the mass of people in this nation that we would call them nuts and look at them as essentially dictatorial parasites on ANY manner of republican or democratic principles. So, why then, is it ok that they hold the same views of an invisible old man with a flowing beard who lives in the sky and has wagged his finger at humanity's transgressions for five thousand years? There is NO semblance whatsoever of democratic tradition inherent in Christianity. There is ONLY dictatorial power that they understand.
What scares me most of all is that their plans are secret. What do they plan to do with us non-Christians? A tax? Concentration camps? And what does re-Christianizing America mean? Public trials and executions for non-believers? Massive government conversion squads?
But I don't think that we need to be afraid of them. There is a MASSIVE ground swell of disenfranchisement and anger toward the governments, state and local, in this county. I'm not even talking about the Tea Party movement but real anger and genuine feeling of the lack of power that will, if we continue on the course we're on now, is going to EXPLODE and manifest itself in widespread violence on the part of their people against their government. I feel that when that happens, if these children are where their plan places them in a decade or so, THEY will be the ones being dragged out of the offices of power and subject to the justice of the people whose power they have taken away.
I just hope they never, ever, ever get to control the destinies of myself, my family and my neighbors who don't believe their warped version of Christianity.
I seriously fear for this country. Bring the country back to God? The common misconception is that the founding fathers of America were Christian, when in fact they are quoted as saying that the world would be better of without religion! This country was started to *escape* government centralized intolerant religion! If the pilgrims could see us today, they would weep. What you quote in regards to "eye for an eye" law is not completely accurate; though I COMPLETELY understand the confusion.
In Leviticus, yes - it does state eye for an eye, people shouldn't eat of the flesh of hoofed animals, women on their cycle are unclean, etc...
Historically, the Leviticus Book of Law was the legal & ethical religious text for post Egypt Israelites. And was followed rigorously. Apart of the Old Testament in the Christian Bible, it is still referenced as religious text by followers of Judaism as it is a part of the Torah (Hebrew Bible). The New Testament chronicles the life right before the birth of Christ & and life after His death. The Old & New Testament make up the Christian Bible.
Now, as Christians believed Jesus died on the cross for the salvation of mankind; people (known as Christians) prayed to Jesus Christ, their eternal sacrificial animal, for forgiveness of sins rather than literally slaughter an animal.
Furthermore, Christians (most) do not have the "eye for an eye" mentality because our faith teaches us that Jesus is the vindicator of all. Thus we don't chop off the hand of a person who steals from us. Or at least we shouldn't. We believe God to be ultimate judge of justice for all. Kinda like a celestial Judge Judy. LOL.
I can understand how that can seem a bit overwhelming, but I would encourage you to at least research somethings. I recommend reading (at least Leviticus)the Bible as a history book. It's really pretty interesting - good stories

I completely agree that these guys are dangerouse but you aint seen nothing yet. I live in the bible belt see North Alabama to be exact. I am from Chicago but had to move here to take care of my parents in thier old age. High schools -heck elementary schools start the indoctrination of Christianity here as soon as they get the child. This is then reinforced all the way through college and beyond if you stay here. It is truly scary, these are the children that will assume control around here as soon as they are old enough. See around here you know who will grow up to be in charge cause it's the same last names that where in charge in the 1800's. This small majority uses religion and patriotism to keep the masses ignorant and under paid. This in turn keeps them busy with the small neccessities in life like earning enough to pay the bills and eat. We have an 80% poverty rate and 40% unemployment. This will never change as any new employers coming in are scrutinized by the local city councils- they have to O.K. any business within the city limits. These city councils are made up of the same people they have been for decades, they own all present businesses and most real estate in the Tri-county area. It is in thier interest that things stay as they are. I know that one company that is now operating here was offering to pay three dollarrs an hour more than thier present top salary. The city council told them they would pay what they said or not open a business here. Of course if they had paid what they wanted the people that worked for the guys on the council would have quit and went to the new jobs. So insted of increasing thier top pay to meet current industry standards they had the new business pay no more than them, keeps every thing more simple you see. If any one local starts making money and maybe finds away to get a real education they might realize they where getting screwed and they can't have that. They run the educational system, the utility system, right down to the penial system. You really can't speak up about it because if you do where will you work and live.- they will make life hell for you trust me. They pull you over constantly, screw up any chance of getting a job, start crazy rumours about you- you can't get a place to rent even. I just keep my mouth shut and wait for the day when i can move back up north.

Just knowing others out there may extremely hate your believe. Does that not raise a grammar school question about an authentic religion, having around the planet all these other Gods? Ok, just watched it. I agree it is highly reminiscent of 'Jesus Camp' (and would not be surprised if some of those children now attend this 'University'), however I would maintain that 'Jesus Camp' is still the more disturbing of the two documentaries... if only because we were privy to the extreme indoctrination of those young children. However, these poor students, only a couple of years younger than myself, have been seriously deprived of basic human freedoms... priory to free speech comes free thought, and this has been methodically removed from their pool of abilities. It's cruel. While some of the morals put forth by various religions are noble and, well, common sense, religion myths as a whole are so obviously fictitious that it is abhorrent to think such a high percentage of a supposedly 'civilized' nation adhere to such literal translations of these myths. I wish them all well in their lives. I hope many of them are able to overcome the obstacles to their happiness and success that have been thrust in their path. For those that are unable to do so... I feel terribly for their future children...
I just finished watching the BBC documentary, God’s Next Army. I was not surprised that Patrick Henry College reinvents Biology to fit their erroneous notion that the Bible is inerrant; however, I was very surprised by the way Patrick Henry College contorts the meaning of Biblical scriptures to support the big business agenda of the Republican Party.
For example, what part of the Bible tells us to privatize social security, repeal the estate tax and reject a compensation fund for asbestos victims that would be primarily financed by the manufacturers of this hazardous material? The 24th Psalm is cited; however, that really seems like one is stretching the meaning way beyond authorial intent.

On average home schooled children do better academically then children taught via the public school system. The problem isn't with where they are taught, with the kids in this doc, it's what they are taught.
On another note, I agree watching this film was very disturbing but I hope others don't hold these kids responsible for what they say as they are as brainwashed as one could be. Let's just hope that the light of reason while shine upon them sometime in the future.

Very similar to Jesus Camp, but at a much more haunting level. This movie really shows the quasi-intellectual side of the Born-Again belief system. I really hope for all these kids' sake that they come to grips with reality and realize that the true problems of the world are much more than gay marriage, abortion, gun rights and big government. The danger here is that we could make the same mistake as Nazi Germany before WWII. The Nazi came to power on a platform of condemning social ills, poverty and other things while claiming to be for God and Christian. Today many rightly believe that the government has swung to far to the left. The danger is when the opposing party develops and cultivates a ground swell of support to take back the high ground and swing the pendelum to the right. How far to the right will it swing? Nazi Germany found out the hard way. Their leaders claimed to be Christian yet a close look at their leaders theology practices and believes tells us they were bad fruit.
Dominionism theology and Joels Army theology and Kingdom Now theology is creeping into many churchs. People do not read their Bible for their selves. Jesus did not tell us to conquer the World. He told us to spread His Gospel to all nations by our words not swords. Many people are decieved by this theology today.
Many people blindly followed Hitler and his leaders in a passionate way and thought they were doing right. There is nothing wrong with stopping and critically thinking about what your doing and believeing. This documentary is a good example of how leaders can cherry pick scriptures totally out of context to mislead many thinking they are serving God.
Don't follow man. Don't be afraid to question motives of others. Follow Jesus Christ. Know those who labor amoung you.
An insightful film into the Republican fundamentalist movement.
The indoctrination of do your masters bidding (not Gods, but your employers), is the arms length distance that allows for over zealous actions to happen, while those in power to aviod blame.
I can't remeber seeing any African-Americans in the film, which is odd because Patrick Henry owned 300, the same number as the student body.
I wonder where are all the minorities that live in America??

I support these young people 100%. A very wise move to better our country.
The documentary summery says:
"Though the separation of church and state is enshrined in the US Constitution, with financial backing from the evangelical community the college aims to ‘rechristianise’ America; to ‘preserve the world from the sinfulness of man'".
This is obviously a media bias. The constitution does not separate church and state as they would have us believe. It actually wants to stop a state-run mandated religion like the Chruch of England, not living out your Christianity in office.

There is nothing else for me to comment on about religion, that people have not heard before!
I had a friend who went to PHC for a year before transferring. He was a homeschooled conservative evangelical. I guess you might say that he had a sheltered upbringing from hearing that, but he did have the fortune of being able to travel to Europe a couple of times so he wasn't totally ignorant of the world around him. Anyway, at some point his BS detector got set off and I got to watch his transformation into one of the more liberal people I've ever met. Granted, being from Oklahoma that might not be saying much.

Their science department is contemptible! What a dangerous group these children will become if they ever achieve any significant power. In some ways this reminds of the way the Hitler Youth were indoctrinated.
