I build robots for a living. We are working on providing humanity with all the basic necessities for survival. Relax your paranoid delusions for a minute and open your mind to a completely different future. Technology is the ONLY answer to furthering the human races survival. Oh yeah , and half of this DOC is purely speculative. Just relax and gain perspective.

I support the idea of technological advancement and I understand that people are going to be fearful of things they don't understand. Hmm...to make the assertion that those who are reluctant to accept that giving up individual autonomy to tech controlled by people or groups we dont know are somehow ignorant as to what these advances are is a sign of poor broad spectrum thinking. The kind of thinking that study after study has shown takes a hit, along with our memory and creativity, from what is essentially a lack of excercise of certain cognitive skills. The irony is that while the world surrounding us gets "smarter", we who create this world get dumber (proven) and eventually, as art, culture, philosophy become obsolete, will lose the ability to perpetuate the exponential growth. The snake will eat its tail as it were. Science and creative thinking go hand in hand. Besides while some of this stuff is extremely beneficial, most of it is driven by a desire to appeal to a race of CONSUMErs, and just as the promise of the great democratizing effect of the internet is quickly evaporating (see net neutrality), so will this promise of a world organized and run for us by benign machinery. Tech in many ways is really only making us better at all the things we never had to do before. The day I see the first 3d printed pizza delivery is the day I swallow 100 pain pills down with a bottle of whiskey.

we can all learn from Dick Perniky (spelled wrong I am Sure), but yeah man I agree with your view. At one point I was living and working in an isolated area of Northern Alberta. The camp ran on gen set power and we did have internet-but was a bad connection and didn't work often. Of 30 people at the camp in 4 months I saw 5 people leave because of the lack of necessitates- i.e. internet connection speed and being off-line very often, lack of cable tv etc... One guy said it didn't bother him when he came- he lasted a week. So dependent on checking his facebook and other stuff. I went fishing after work-enjoyed nature before winter came. It really is sad and gets worse each day. not saying we should all drop off using technology but maybe realize that CAN live without the gadgets. People's perception of Wants and Needs have drastically changed in last 100 years. But the reality of it hasn't- to bad so few realize it. You say 80% I wonder what it would be for people under that age of 40? 30? 20?
Trust me, if cell phones disappeared today.... humanity is not at risk of extinction. Our phones are helpful in everyday activities? Absolutely this is why people want them in their lives and they fret without them. Make no mistakes about it, we as a species would be fine in no time without cell phones. Who would benefit from these developments exactly? I don't see anything here to solve population growth, food shortage, starvation, pandemics, climate change, energy crisis. A glossy bmw made of material with a V8 is going to be pretty useless when there's no fossil fuel left. I watched a lot of shows like this when I was younger, none of the ideas ever materialized (a part from the compact disc), even those are now obsolete. Whole docs like a promo of playboy tat, none of which will ever be cost effective.

I find amusing that this documentary talks about having a machine that needs not a human to be operative being able take humans to work. What kind of job is going to be available when machines become the norm? It's ridiculous to build machines for today's standards of economics and society. Here's where the primitive thinking comes in..."JOBS". No one ever needs any job...or any money. We need food, clothing, housing, transportation, medical care, etc. Make machines to make and provide those things...then we can finally be free to live our lives.
That's the crux of the matter. People actually believe that this system is the epitome of human achievement, when in fact it's absolutely barbaric and destructive. But then again, they also believe that governments actually have the intention to improve conditions and slavishly bow down to their mechanical (f)laws and essentially sold their soul.
Humans are able to create incredible virtual realities but are unable to setup a system that provides everyone's basic needs - to me this is the height of irony. As long as this is not overcome and humans sacrifice truth, love, freewill & freedom in favor of abstract laws and practical constraints, it will only get worse. If that is to come, I do believe the human species may become more diverse. Ideally, advances in technology like this could help humankind, as we could all live like kings and queens, but greed invariably gets in the way. In this case, elite, powerful people will not like commoners having the same advantages as them. Something will give.
I think there will be a big catastrophy or uprising when the machines take away the job of most people. But then again if they could replace most jobs with machines overnight. Then people would not need jobs anymore. They would just eat, entertain themselfes, sleep and f***.
I think that this is a great documentary and that anyone who questions the material should start doing some research on AI and future technologies. It is going to happen no mater what some ignorant troll on the interwebs states. I, personally, could not be more excited for these future technologies to become reality.

Some pretty interesting stuff. Yeah there will be some of those technologies developed for daily use but some of the technological theories are really just a dream like fantasy. Technology has changed all aspects of our life dramatically, and will do so and keeps continuing to evolve and integrate more into our daily lives.

Did automobile technology ever follow a smooth exponential curve, doubling in power every 12 to 18 months? I don't think so. The only people who ever predicted flying cars knew nothing about how technology really evolves. Your arugment is not very well thought out.
Many technologies almost always end up being used for evil and destructive purposes, especially when you involve governments and their overreach and their adoption - that is just the nature of mankind. Remember towards the end of the 19th century and the industrial revolution and what it brought to us throughout the twentieth century with the world wars and nuclear weapons. One must be cautious and exceedingly aware of all of the unintended consequences of rapid, uncontrolled technological "advancments".
Look at the younger generations now who do nothing but sit in front of a video game for days on end. They are getting fat and lazy. Is this the type of world we want to live in in the future? Corporations would also love to get their hands on it and interfere by inserting ads everywhere.
Also, governments would like nothing better than to use all of these so-called advancements to control us more and more. I have to laugh at the game controllers that simulate various games when all the person has to do is go to the local bowling alley or go out in the fresh air. It is verging on the ridiculous and redundant. Mankind will never be able to compare to the power of nature. We cannot even cure basic diseases now such as the common cold.
Also look at all of the problems surrounding reproductive "technology" that are coming now. It scares me to think what the future world will look like. It is the height of naivete to think that our lives will be improved by a robot taking all of our jobs away. A good reason why the unemployment rate is so high now is because of the uncontrolled expansion of technology.
For the most part, I agree with your post. A lot of this technology has massive potential to end up corrupted. Particularly in terms of advertisements, and what that could mean for the "enhanced reality" contact lenses.
Buuuut, I have to disagree with you on your video game concepts. Our younger generation may be sitting in front of a video game for days on end, but that's precisely what the generation before did with televisions.
And while you're right about going to the actual world to be entertained, quite a lot of the video game industry is centered around things that we can't possibly do in our life - that's why the bulk of video games are fantasy, sci-fi, and war games.

I think many (if not most) will initially share your opinion regarding technology implants. I do not think this view will hold out for long, however, as people's basic competitive nature will kick in. How will you continue to resist, for instance, a brain implant that gives you access to all of the world's knowledge (nearly instantly) when more and more people around you have them. With each new technology come new abilities that make those who lack those abilities more and more obsolete.
I compare this view to my own initial resistance to Cellphone technology. Even as a Computer Science Major and technophile, I simply didn't like the idea of always being in contact with everyone I know. For this reason I did not purchace a cellphone until 2005, when the competitive disadvantages to not owning one became just too strong to resist. I simply couldn't support clients or do my job nearly as effectively without one.
Even today, I find myself annoyed by friends/family who take offence to the lack of an immediate response to their text or call on my cell. Even with this in mind, I couldn't imagine not having access to the features I accepted only 6 years ago.
I honestly don't blame people for fearing, or viewing with dread, the comming technologies. A quick scan of the posts on this doc certainly makes it clear that this attitude is real and pervasive. In the end, though, technological evolution is ubiquitous and we will all have to adapt whether we want to or not.

To answer your question directly, Evolution. Taken as a whole, the Universe itself can be viewed as a glorious process that spawned The Stars/Galaxies, then Elements/Chemistry, then Complex Chemistry/Life... and now, Culture/Technology.
The ever-accellerating pace of Cultural and Technological Evolution is the greatest force shaping change on our planet. Despite what I read from many, it is impossible to argue that the evolution of Technology is anything less than a Net-Positive for Mankind. This holds true even when considering the "worst" inventions such as weapons of mass destruction.
I often hear people suggest that earlier cultures, such as the Native Americans, lived in some kind of wonderful harmony with the enviornment. This is really not true, as they lived in constant fear of the environment much like our ancient ancestors. Their lives were brutal and short-lived; averaging just under 30-Years before succumbing to the pressures which all natural organisms face in the relentless struggle for existance.
It is technology that allows Humanity to adapt and meet these selective pressures and, as a result, we have nearly trippled our individual life-spans. This is not a trend that is going away, technology is ubiquitous and it is the Natural "Next Step" in an Emergent Universe that trends/evolves towards higher and higher levels of complexity. Cultures that do not develop advanced technologies will simply pass into the oblivion of history, replaced by those that are better able to adapt and thus survive.
The problems of world-hunger, climate change, ect... will be solved by one thing and one thing only. Human Technology.... It is quite reasonable to argue that, in some of these cases, Humans are not intelligent enough to solve the problems. This will facillitate, through a very natural process of selection, Intelligent Machines. This is, in my opinion, very natural and very good. Any way you look at it, however, there is no stopping it.

Change is coming whether we like it or not.It may not come too soon(30-50yrs),but whenever it comes it will have a great impact on our society.
Amazing technologies are coming to open new horizons to our lives.Will new tech improve our quality of life by default? Of course not, for if it were for the technology alone, even present day tech would have established a heaven on earth.
Our political and socioeconomic structure is continuously becoming vastly inadequate to accommodate the new perceptions science and tech bring.We,mostly, are trapped in archaic dualistic ideas, which we treat with reverence they don't deserve, eg religion and atheism,soul and matter,employment and unemployment,rich and poor,smart and dumb,black and white, capitalism and communism,democracy and monarchy,ethical and unethical, money and value.
In addition our education lags behind new scientific developments.Even though new tech(see internet) resists this phenomenon we are still badly educated.We lack basic understanding of fundamental scientific principles and as a result we are carried away by false trains of thought and conclusions.
What new scientific developments imply is that basic needs for survival will no longer be a problem.They imply that basic resources for survival wont have the traditional limits, so they also imply that our whole financial system(be it corporeal or electronic money) is meaningless.Most of the employment and the jobs today are based on this principle of survival, which is why they won't have any meaning in the future. Are we going to abandon so easily this hardwired perception of survival(see improvement through difficulties and pain)? I don't think so.This is why big turmoil is ahead of us.
Last but not least is the problem of the so called third world.If developed countries would find it difficult to adapt to the new technological tsunami, it would be far more difficult for the developing countries to assimilate what would seem between magic and new religion. It would be for them like for the fish out of the water.Because they are more than the developed world used to live through difficulties eg the urge to survive.How would such an individual live in a world where every conceivable biological need could be satisfied? It would become addicted to indulge into these satisfactions and so would become sterile and counterproductive.We already see this in rich countries, smoking, drugs, obesity, depression and other psychiatric disorders as a result of a stubborn denial to abandon survivalism and accept creativeness and innovation.
The only thing I don't like about this documentary are the comments I'm reading from all the Neo-Socialist "Zeitgeist" Types. This documentary is about technology; if that's what you want to comment on, lets hear it. Ray Kurzweil (featured in this doc) is a pure genius. Some people may find his ideas on the comming technological singularity to be frightning, others may find it fanciful or unrealistic... The fact of the matter is, his record for predicting future trends years in advance is incredibly accurate. This is because he builds mathmatical models that actually make predictions about the world. This is far more than I can say for the pseudo-scientific hippies included in the Zeitgeist doc.

So really that maybe a bit zealous on their part, don't know about most of you, but chances are I will be about 80 years old when this sort of reality happens. So it isn't like they said this will all happen at once, tomorrow. And we know enough about technology that it is nearly imposable to predict. Most things we take for granted day to day would not have been dreamed up 20 years ago.

I specially like the part that briefly mentions the idea of RFID chips embedded almost on any object and living thing out there. With this technology you could definitely say bye bye to privacy.
Hopefully these RFID chips as mentioned in the doc will not be the next big target for identity theft cases and hackers around the globe!!!! Obviously RFIDs will present a huge risk to privacy.

I like that people are thinking about these things but i dissagree with some points. Firstly it is unlikely that a large enough slew of natural disasters, as you put it, would occur to destroy or cripple all technology or all knowledge of technology. It is definately possible but unlikely.
Secondly i would like to ask what is "physical"? what is "natural"? and what is "reality"?
I can understand that our society has change significantly over only the past decade, but in terms of technology i dissagree we have gone in the wrong direction. I do agree however that we have lost our connectedness and this is in part due to our dependence on certain technologies like social networking (the irony).
What i do definately agree on is that we are headed for collapse. This is not due to techonology though in my opinion. It is due to the sick society that we have continued to breed across the world. I won't go into this as its not particularly relevant to this documentary. But if you haven't watched them watch the Zeitgeist movies.
But i think some of us will be able to survive though if all really ,does go down the drain, by simply being informed in the simple techonologies or being able to work them out through basic knowledge that we all (should) have.
Lastly, a world free from monotonous, repetetive, worthless labor and pain is absolutely possible to achieve. But it takes an enormous amount of resposibility.

In response, firstly I should clarify I was not necessarily forecasting or even imagining natural disasters that would wipe out "all technology" but thinking about scenarios that would disable or cripple technology in large enough sectors for significant enough time - eg. massive solar storms which are anticipated in late 2012, early 2013.
Secondly, when I refer to physical, natural, and reality, I'm talking about having a sense of biology in a greater context...where our food comes from, what a tree looks like, what a whole forest of them looks like, where wood for our houses comes from, etc. etc. Basically an innate sense of balance that is required when you live directly from the land and which can be (only temporarily as it will come back to bite us) forgotten and avoided by technology and importing/exporting etc.
I have watched the Zeitgeist movies and I like that they are asking bold questions and posing bold solutions but I feel there is a certain degree of naivate involved. I unfortunately agree a bit more with Derrick Jensen (see the doc on this site End: Civ) that to a great degree civilization is the problem, which brings me to your last point. I think the Zeigeist thing about worthless labor is wrongheaded to a degree. Monotonous labor which exists to sustain an overly consumptive and unsustainable society, should indeed be done away with. However, I would not consider tilling the soil, tending crops and animals, building a house, making a fire, catching fish, etc...in that category. My concern about the Venus Project solution is that it assumes these kinds of labor are somehow primitive. I would advocate a return to a more "primitive" way of life. I would not want to be living in the Venus project reality only to have a solar storm or 9.0 earthquake devastate the whole technological bedrock of society fail...and have everyone stand around asking each other what humans figured out millions of years ago...um..anyone know how to make a fire? I'm cold....

Suppose we go to this extent and a slew of natural disasters cripple this techno-dependent society, several generations after losing any sense of physical, natural, reality and connectedness. Imagine the pandemonium, the horror. I choose a life that is directly connected to the real, the physical, the natural, etc. I don't mind using technology, obviously I'm doing so now, but I'm of the opinion that we are headed for collapse and that it may be wise to be comfortable with old-school human skills, and to be prepared to live a satisfying life with simple tools, rather than a wildly unsustainable selfish and consumptive lifestyle with glowing eyes fawning over a future in which I am freed from all labor, pain, responsibility, etc. You can have it psinet, and I certainly will not accept it.
A thought: May be man and ape seperated at one time, eons ago, the way we are about to seperate from one an other. Some will chose to robotize and some will chose to remain humans. One day the robots may put us in a zoo and look at us as strange dumb animals. I completely agree. The "intelligence" that this doc praises and indeed idolizes, is only one kind of intelligence...the kind that is about gathering and synthesizing data. There is also spiritual intelligence or intuition, which is much deeper, harder to pin down, and I am sure laughable and irrelevant to folks like Psinet. So be it.
I'm unnerved by the cheery and almost religious indoctrination-like tone of the doc. "Here it comes! Your wonderful future! It is coming and you can't do anything to stop it, but don't be afraid...try it you'll like it!" Not to mention that while I agree all these developments are possible in theory, they are out of step with our unraveling relationship with our planet and its resources. This future will only happen if there is a genocide of all the poor and undesirables, leaving adequate resources for such a spoiled-brat elite who simply must have everything and become super cyborg humans. I'm disgusted honestly. I don't want that future, and I disagree with the scientist who says my time is up. I will happily disappear onto a few acres with a garden, game to hunt, candles for light, hard work to be done, and the people I love nearby working with me. It's because such technologies are coming, that we need to review our political systems, social structure,finance and last, but not least, education.If, we adress this major problem, then all future technologies will be beneficial. But because it's quite certain that we won't, at least in the beginning, these innovations won't arrive without a general turmoil.
We tend to idealise our belief systems, our political and financial systems.We are badly educated to need Gods such as christianity, judaism, hinduism,satanism, or capitalism, communism and many other -isms.
We dream of a perfect world(as described above,) but we do not realise that we are hoplessely stuck to our ancestral instincts and worldviews, to bear such a perfect world.
I am not going to suggest that we need a new world order, because it's those that suggest this, that fear change the most. To the unprepared a lot of difficult questions will arise:

Amazing but very scary !! Who wants to live in a world where your life is organised by robots and where it becomes your eternal reminder for every steps you make and every thought you have . Yes, mass manipulation for better production if this technology would get developped by the griddy minds that control already our planet ! But if well and fairly developped to help humanity's well being , it could be a huge step in human's evolution , we could probably plug into a programative matrix that could put everyone on the same scale in terms of level of intelligence and infinite creative posibilities .....then we would move to light speed ,I am curious to see the unfold of this !

Good doc....BUT there is one thing that can stop ALL of this technology in it's tracks: EMP! Nuclear or otherwise, all of this tech will come to a screeching halt.
Without natural survival and cognitive skills "cyborg" anything will not help.
There is shielding, of course, but on a day to day basis I don't think that humans with all the built in electronics, etc. will last very long.
BTW...if the computer controls your car, EMP = CRASH.
If the computer controls your house, EMP = no electricity, internet connection, communications, water(?).

That makes no sense whatsoever. We meat machines happen to die of just about anything - virus's, gas, bullets, bombs etc etc - yet we manage.
Plus EMP is more legend than truth. If it were so easy then the US military would not be so unassailable.
If there are that many "intelligent" brains around then everyone in our world should be healthy, happy, clothed, fed and housed by now and peacefully appreciating the natural gifts our planet has so what's up with that?

If a machine is intelligent enough to ask you to not turn it off, its got some idea of what to expect and probably has made some preparations to survive. That machine had better be isolated from wireless and hard line communications and utterly destroyed afterward.
We will have to compete with machines in the future....as if we're not already competing now to make very few people very rich as we waste our lives competing.
Remember that this is a world where a lot of people go to bed hungry every day. How do you put together hunger and resource depletion with this machine filled resourceful future.

It's pretty much a near certainty that reasoning can not be realistically put into a machine without organic material. There is nothing for for the 'reasoning soul' to attach to, only a human-made program and we haven't the intelligence, capability or time to recreate what evolution has created in specific micro-steps over billions of years.
We can simulate intelligence, that's it!

Hmm. Lots of rather big claims. I get the feeling that there's a lot of debate behind some of the statements made in this documentary... It raises some thought-provoking ideas though.
Meh. I don't any of the new things they saywill be here in the future. I still rather listen to vinyls and drive old 80's cars. I'm still living in the analog age.
Really good look at some futuristic tech that is right around the corner if not already here. I enjoyed it. :)
