DOGE is tasked with disruption and not efficiency. There is a reasonable argument that redundancy can be eliminated, but how DOGE is implementing layoffs doesn’t necessarily address redundancy and instead is more akin to placing an agency in cardiac arrest to help cure its problems. It creates more issues that has an adverse effect on overall performance, which justifies more cuts, with the cycle spiraling downward until the departments can no longer achieve their goals established under law.

The Department of Education was created by an Executive Order by Carter in 1979 = DOE WAS NOT created by Congress and can be eliminated by Executive Order by Trump! Our kids are dumber due to the ineffectiveness of the DOE… And Trump is killing wasteful Federal Contracts too!

As someone that works for the federal government, I can say it should be demonized. For every one hard-working, productive member of the government there’s three slackers.

@KylesLMTVtinyhouse April 2, 2025 - 12:41 am

You guys are so out of touch. Most of us want the EPA to be highly scaled back if not eliminated altogether. We also think that the burden of wildfire protection should be on those that live in the wildfire affected areas. I shouldn’t have to pay to protect your house when you have downed trees and firewood piled up against your house in the middle of a damn forest. It’s cute and scenic, but not my problem.

This was an interesting story because usually the numbers of US government contractors is never mentioned but they got the numbers wrong. No one knows the exact numbers of contractors but there at least 2-3 contractors for every government worker so if there are around 2M federal employees there must be at least 4-6 million federal contractors. These numbers for weird reason never include the military or their contractors. If you add up all those numbers including the military you probably have 10-12 million people drawing a federal paycheck. Also consider that 100K employees retire every year + another 50K quit, so just don't replace them and you have your 250 in less than 2 years. Cutting 250K is barely a rounding error, its nothing.

Finally consider there are 350M people in the US and on the high-end 12M in federal service including the military, that's 3.4% to run the country and fight. Does that sound bloated to you?

@Jack-b4g1e April 2, 2025 - 12:41 am

Cut it! 10 percent is not enough, we want 30 percent.

@msromike123 April 2, 2025 - 12:41 am

So FUD? Wildfire, veterans, social security, food banks, plagues of locusts? How could it not be?

When someone says do it with a scalpel and not an axe, that is code for don't do anything. Where were all these scalpel wielding surgeons the past 4 years?

Summary (with chapter timestamps): The U.S. federal government employs 2.4 million people, and while there are efforts to downsize the government to cut costs and move resources to the private sector, concerns exist about the potential impact on public services and the economy, as well as the legality of mass firings.
0:00 🏢 Federal Workforce Size & Layoffs
• 🇺🇸 The U.S. federal government employs roughly 2.4 million people across over 400 agencies, excluding postal workers and active duty military personnel.
• 📉 President Trump aimed to decrease the federal workforce by up to 10%, leading to layoffs challenged in court and subsequent job reinstatements.
• ⚖️ Courts are challenging the legality of dismantling agencies like the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, U.S. Agency for International Development, and Department of Education.

1:37 💰 Rationale for Cuts & Budget Impact
• ✂️ The Trump administration claims the federal government is too large and inefficient, echoing past efforts to streamline the workforce and cut spending.
• 💰 In fiscal year 2024, personnel compensation and benefits totaled $835 billion, only 8.6% of total government spending, less than the interest paid on government debt.
• 📊 The federal workforce size has remained stable for 50 years, while federal spending has quintupled, attributed to an increase in federal contractors.

4:12 🧑‍⚕️ Composition & Function of Civil Service
• 🩺 The civil service includes 2 million career professionals, with the largest occupation being health care related, including nurses.
• 🍎 These workers inspect meat, ensure air system safety as air traffic controllers, and protect digital infrastructure from foreign incursions.
• 🎯 Strategic cuts, like those under Clinton's National Performance Review, focus on eliminating regulations and improving government functioning, saving around $136 billion.

6:50 📉 Contractor vs. Employee Costs
• 🤝 Experts suggest focusing on reducing federal contractors rather than direct federal employees to control costs effectively.
• 🏛️ Clinton-era reforms reduced the federal workforce by 426,000 employees, creating the smallest federal government since Eisenhower's presidency.
• 🌾 USAID buys $2.1 billion worth of wheat, soybeans, and rice from American farmers annually, sending it to starving people overseas.

9:28 💼 Impact on Private Sector & Local Economies
• 💸 Some argue cutbacks aim to move the workforce into the private sector or state and local governments, potentially boosting the private sector.
• 🤔 However, experts predict downsides, including increased competition in local economies and potential harm to local economies.
• ⚠️ Randomly eliminating programs and employees may not achieve desired goals, as it fails to address the underlying issues.

11:06 ⚠️ Potential Impact on Public Services
• 💧 Concerns arise that successful downsizing efforts could impact public services, such as the EPA, potentially leading to boil water notices.
• 🔥 Layoffs at the U.S. Forest Service raise questions about resources available to prevent wildfires, especially after deadly fires in Los Angeles.
• 🏥 Mass terminations could affect services provided to veterans by the VA and impact school and university access to federal funds.

@experiencedITguy April 2, 2025 - 12:41 am

Indian immigrants who became managers are destroying corporate America with their imported Caste, religion, regional bias to discriminate the workers under them, these guys are unfit to be a managers and occupying SVP, VP and Director level positions in all the companies including privately owned mutual fund and financial services organizations. These guys are destroying work culture of America and the people of America will be suffering a lot unless DOL take appropriate actions to check all these North India based immigrant managers in top financial services sectors especially.

@ilynpayne7491 April 2, 2025 - 12:41 am

America needs to print more money 💰 😂😂

@MannyMM April 2, 2025 - 12:41 am

you can't have everyone employed by the government.

@darylb5564 April 2, 2025 - 12:41 am

Think about this…
Less than half of Americans have a job.
About 1 out of 50 work for the government.
Now add all of the soldiers firefighters cops teachers and all of the other state and local employees getting a paycheck from a government.
Are you serious when you ask if we are bloated?😮

@rsimch April 2, 2025 - 12:41 am

Bloated employment is humongous in India where they even create many chief engineer positions at the same time, while chiefe engineer position still remains only one in every engineering or any management organizational structure, and they all get corrupt and get away with it, even IAS, IPS, IES and IFS officers like Uttam Khobragade and his daughter Devyani Khobragade as their despicable work and corruption histories as in records and off records shows 😮😮😮😮😮😮😮
Doctors and hospitals exploit patients and even dead bodies kept in ICUs hidden away for falsified invoicing for days after death, but B R Shetty group hospitals and every other ones have such evil histories making on a daily basis 😮😮😮😮😮

@Shoulderdevil2023 April 2, 2025 - 12:41 am

Bottom line spending increased to produce 2 trillion deficit. Before it was still running at 500 billion per year United states must cut programs. People need to earn and take care of themselves. 60% of people get some form of government transfer payment. un sustainable
