Memorable political insults

After 14 years of Tory failure, record numbers of people are out of work for health reasons and one in eight young people is not in work, education, or training.
Left as it is, a generation of young people risk being written off and millions of people who want to work won’t get the support they need.
That’s why I have today set out Labour’s plans to fix the broken social security system, protect those that need it, and support more people into work, to unlock growth as part of our Plan for Change.
With this Government, the social security system will always be there for people in need. That is a principle we will never compromise on.
But disabled people and people with health conditions who can work should have the same rights, choices and chances to work as everybody else. That principle of equality is vital too.
Together, we are creating a more pro-active, pro-work system for those who can work. And protecting those who cannot work, ensuring they are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve, now and into the future.
Since we were elected we’ve made huge progress to get more people into good work through our Plan for Change:
• We’re investing nearly an extra £26 billion into the NHS to drive down waiting lists and help get people back to health and back to work.
• We’re improving the quality of work and making work pay with our landmark Employment Rights Bill and increases in the national living wage.
• We’re creating more good jobs in every part of the country in clean energy and through our modern industrial strategy.
• And we’re introducing the biggest reforms to employment support in a generation, with our £240 million Get Britain Working plan.
Alongside these measures, Labour will fix the broken social security system that we inherited from 14 years of Tory failure – so that it is geared towards work:
• We will reform employment support with £1 billion of investment, so that those who can work are supported to do so.
• We will scrap the hated Work Capability Assessment that many find complex and stressful. In future, extra money will be based on the impact of someone’s health condition or disability, not on their capacity to work.
• And we will bring in a permanent, above-inflation rise to the standard allowance in Universal Credit – for the first time ever – a decisive step to tackle perverse incentives in the system.
Through these reforms, Labour will deliver a social security system that is fit for the future. One that is fairer and that provides vital support to those who need it most.
