Can’t Get You Out of My Head was crafted from a massive archive of music and video footage. It begins with the cultural revolutions of the 1960s and continues through Donald Trump’s fraught presidency and Britain’s Brexit crisis. In addition to the fast-paced visuals, Curtis provides a personal, emotional element by incorporating the stories of an eclectic range of people, from a 1970s Civil Rights leader to the wife of Mao Zedong.

Curtis decries the connections necessary to concoct conspiracy theories while simultaneously constructing them himself. Likewise, his series shows the ever-changing nature of politics juxtaposed with its lasting effect on history. Can’t Get You Out of My Head traces the roots of such events and proposes what can be expected in the future.

8 Minutes and 46 Seconds: The Killing of George Floyd https://watchdocumentaries.com/8-minutes-and-46-seconds-the-killing-of-george-floyd/ https://watchdocumentaries.com/8-minutes-and-46-seconds-the-killing-of-george-floyd/#comments Sun, 14 Jun 2020 23:00:00 +0000 https://watchdocumentaries.com/?p=3485 8 Minutes and 46 Seconds: The Killing of George Floyd delves into the death of a black man at the hands of a white police officer in Minneapolis that sparked Black Lives Matter protests across the world. The title of the documentary refers to the length of time officer Derek Chauvin spent kneeling on George Floyd’s neck despite his pleas that he could not breathe. Global outrage ensued after footage of the incident went viral, bringing the discussion on systematic racism back to the forefront.

Floyd, a 46-year-old father from Texas, had moved to Minneapolis in 2014 for a better life and was working as a security guard before his death. A medical examiner ruled his death as a homicide, stating that his heart had stopped due to compression to his neck during the police restrainment. Officer Chauvin, who has been charged with second-degree murder and is being held at a state prison, faces up to forty years behind bars if convicted.

Narrated by Idris Elba, this Sky documentary features contributions from American civil rights campaigner Rev. Jesse Jackson, Malcolm X’s daughter Ilyasah Shabazz, playwright and novelist Bonnie Greer, and Black Lives Matter activist Zellie Imani.

After Truth: Disinformation and the Cost of Fake News https://watchdocumentaries.com/after-truth-disinformation-and-the-cost-of-fake-news/ https://watchdocumentaries.com/after-truth-disinformation-and-the-cost-of-fake-news/#comments Thu, 19 Mar 2020 00:00:00 +0000 https://watchdocumentaries.com/?p=4506 After Truth: Disinformation and the Cost of Fake News explores the ongoing threat caused by the ‘fake news’ phenomenon in the United States, focusing on the real-life consequences of spreading disinformation, false stories and conspiracy theories online.

Directed by Andrew Rossi, the documentary interviews both victims and purveyors of fake news, as well as journalists and experts who help contextualise its impact. It demonstrates that although false stories are not a new phenomenon, the high usage of modern technology allows for them to be widely disseminated online and creates a breeding ground for misunderstanding. The film deconstructs the fake news process by explaining how it exploits distrust and fear to aid its proliferation, and looks at several past events that can be traced back to disinformation and untruthful claims posted on social media.

The Social Dilemma delves into the ability of social media to spread rumors, false information, social and political manipulations, and bullying content like wildfire. It also explains how devastating this effect has been on the youth as they have become addicted to the opinions and views of others on these platforms to the detriment of their mental health.

This documentary ultimately exposes the increase in teen depression and suicide rate and its connection with the dangers of addiction to the various available social platforms.

Poverty in the USA https://watchdocumentaries.com/poverty-in-the-usa/ https://watchdocumentaries.com/poverty-in-the-usa/#respond Wed, 27 Nov 2019 00:00:00 +0000 https://watchdocumentaries.com/?p=3719 Although the United States is amongst the wealthiest nations in the world, it is also home to widespread poverty. Interestingly, the number of Americans living in conditions of poverty has doubled in the past half century. For these individuals, who are often thrust quickly into hunger and homelessness, survival is a battle with several complications. Among them are a shocking 1.5 million homeless children. This documentary, Poverty in the USA, details the daily battles of America’s poor.

The Appalachians, a region known for its mining and mountains, has frequently seen its community members use food stamps to carry out their necessary shopping. Unfortunately, many impoverished Americans end up losing their homes alongside their incomes. In such cases, some individuals must resort to using cars for shelter. In the famous Los Angeles, California, relief organizations have sprung up to aid the city’s homeless by providing them with wooden huts.

Inside the Secret World of Incels https://watchdocumentaries.com/inside-the-secret-world-of-incels/ https://watchdocumentaries.com/inside-the-secret-world-of-incels/#comments Sat, 13 Jul 2019 23:00:00 +0000 https://watchdocumentaries.com/?p=4505 Inside the Secret World of Incels shines a light on the incel community, an online subculture linked to multiple murders and hate crimes against women. Incels, short for ‘involuntarily celibate’, are an online community of frustrated young men who blame women for their sexual rejection and discuss misogynistic ideas.

The community came into prominence after Elliot Rodger, the son of a British filmmaker, went on a killing spree at the University of California in 2014, murdering six fellow students before ending his own life. He explained in a chilling video that his motivation was to punish women for his perceived sexual and social rejections. Disturbingly, some members of the incel community idolise Rodger, and his actions have inspired three other mass killings directed at women in North America.

The documentary lifts the lid on this notoriously closed community by speaking to three self-identifying incels and examining how a toxic online ideology can cause young men to lash out violently. It also looks at other underlying issues that affect some of these men, including mental health issues and childhood trauma.

Abused by My Girlfriend https://watchdocumentaries.com/abused-by-my-girlfriend/ https://watchdocumentaries.com/abused-by-my-girlfriend/#respond Mon, 18 Feb 2019 00:00:00 +0000 https://watchdocumentaries.com/?p=5139 Abused by My Girlfriend tells the story of 23-year-old British man Alex Skeel, who survived an abusive relationship with his girlfriend, and leads to a wider discussion of masculinity, the complex nature of relationships, and stereotypes about abuse and domestic violence.

The film dives into the relationship Skeel had with his girlfriend Jordan Worth through interviews with Skeel and his family and friends. It paints a picture of an average man who for years endured a form of unthinkable, raw violence, both physical and mental, that is infrequently told from a male victim point of view. It demonstrates how Skeel’s livelihood was slowly slipping away and how even family and friends had no idea what was happening.

The documentary portrays a teenage romance that slowly warped into something else entirely, using police testimony to showcase Skeel’s suffering from one of the most severe domestic violence cases the police department had ever seen.

Human Zoos: America’s Forgotten History of Scientific Racism https://watchdocumentaries.com/human-zoos-americas-forgotten-history-of-scientific-racism/ https://watchdocumentaries.com/human-zoos-americas-forgotten-history-of-scientific-racism/#comments Fri, 07 Sep 2018 23:00:00 +0000 https://watchdocumentaries.com/?p=3478 Human Zoos: America’s Forgotten History of Scientific Racism tells the story of how many indigenous people were displayed in exhibitions throughout America during the twentieth century, especially at the time of St. Louis World’s Fair and the early operation of the Bronx Zoo.

Visitors of these exhibits often ridiculed the indigenous people on display, and organisers labelled them as the ‘missing link’ that connected apes and humans. Some of the most respected scientists of the early twentieth century organised and supported these public displays, and leading newspapers of that time often promoted the events.

The documentary shares the tragic life story of Ota Benga, the Congo Pygmy man who was purchased by a missionary and put on display in America. Newspapers with African-American authors strongly opposed his mistreatment. This film also discusses how some people use Social Darwinism as a means of degrading other humans.

Stephen: The Murder that Changed a Nation https://watchdocumentaries.com/stephen-the-murder-that-changed-a-nation/ https://watchdocumentaries.com/stephen-the-murder-that-changed-a-nation/#respond Sun, 15 Apr 2018 23:00:00 +0000 https://watchdocumentaries.com/stephen-the-murder-that-changed-a-nation/ Murder is always an uncomfortable subject, but crimes driven by hate are even more troubling. Stephen Lawrence, an 18-year-old black British man, was killed by a gang of white teenagers in a racially-motivated unprovoked attack in London, England in 1993. Incompetence, corruption and institutional racism in the police force allowed the youth’s murderers to walk free.

This BBC documentary series recounts the miscarriage of justice that occurred in the handling of the Lawrence case and its coverage in the news media. It also focuses on Stephen’s mother Doreen, who has fought for justice for her son for over a quarter of a century. Her efforts garnered the attention of celebrities, politicians, and newspapers around the UK, and indeed the world. Highly emotional, provocative, and enlightening, the documentary includes never-before-aired footage and information about this nation-changing murder case.

Period: End of Sentence https://watchdocumentaries.com/period-end-of-sentence/ https://watchdocumentaries.com/period-end-of-sentence/#respond Wed, 04 Apr 2018 23:00:00 +0000 https://watchdocumentaries.com/?p=3477 Period: End of Sentence shines a stark light on the culture and taboo around menstruation in India. The film observes a group of local women in Hapur, norther India as they disrupt the tacit disregard of the female body within their community. Making sanitary pads that are both affordable and biodegradable, they seek to educate young women and make mensuration safer. In doing so, they in effect, contribute and spark a sexual revolution in their region.

The young women of the region suffered silently for generations prior without access to feminine hygiene products or an appropriate outlet to voice their concerns. In many cases, this led to them missing school and various aspects of their life. When the biodegradable and affordable sanitary pads arrived in their village, a sense of empowerment washed through the female community.
