In the storied city of Bethlehem, Banksy finds that his hotel and the city’s people need a festive upgrade. Torn between the tension of Israel and Palestine, Christmas itself seems to be at war. Even the artist’s Walled Off hotel finds no peace. With an Israeli watchtower monitoring the nearby occupied territories, his hotel gives its tenants no break from their reality.

To provide relief and bring light to the situation, Banksy calls upon Danny Boyle. Flying across the world to Bethlehem, the Hollywood director is given the charge to build a nativity play. With the stakes set high, Christmas must be saved in the little town of Bethlehem.

Forest, Field & Sky: Art Out of Nature https://watchdocumentaries.com/forest-field-sky-art-out-of-nature/ https://watchdocumentaries.com/forest-field-sky-art-out-of-nature/#respond Mon, 02 May 2016 23:00:00 +0000 https://watchdocumentaries.com/?p=3470 Forest, Field & Sky: Art Out of Nature looks at the intimate and awe-inspiring relationship between art, artist, and nature.

The film focuses on landscape art and artists’ careful arrangements of the natural world. To rekindle the connection between human existence and the earth, Dr. James Fox explores six unique British landscapes. With each spot a thoughtful discussion of the artist’s perspective is given, as well as a deep reverence for the feelings evoked.

One artist piece explored is David Nash’s Ash Dome, hidden away in a secure location near Snowdonia. In it, a living sculpture, planted in 1977 is unveiled. A circle, forty years in the making, is shown to made of twenty-two ash trees. Overhead, a dome of leaves and branches serve as a shade from the sun. Also included are stone sculpture from Andy Goldsworthy and sky spaces from James Turrell.

A Brief History of Graffiti https://watchdocumentaries.com/a-brief-history-of-graffiti/ https://watchdocumentaries.com/a-brief-history-of-graffiti/#respond Mon, 24 Aug 2015 23:00:00 +0000 https://watchdocumentaries.com/?p=4109 To many, graffiti may seem like a modern form of petty vandalism. A Brief History of Graffiti, however, goes on to explain why that descriptor is wrong on all accounts. Art historian Dr Richard Clay explores the scribbles humans have carved, drawn or painted into their surroundings all over the world and all across the span of time, from French cave paintings to Russian messages found in the Reichstag building in Berlin in 1945 to modern street art.

Through this exploration of history, Dr Clay makes the case that cave paintings are an early form of graffiti, that graffiti is a form of expression for people who have no other ways to express themselves, and that there is an important difference between vandalism and street art.

The World’s Most Expensive Stolen Paintings https://watchdocumentaries.com/the-worlds-most-expensive-stolen-paintings/ https://watchdocumentaries.com/the-worlds-most-expensive-stolen-paintings/#respond Sat, 21 Dec 2013 00:00:00 +0000 https://watchdocumentaries.com/the-worlds-most-expensive-stolen-paintings/ Art critic Alastair Sooke investigates the shadowy world of art heists. Although 47,000 pieces of artwork are reported missing every year, only the high-profile cases are publicised in the media. Many cases remain engulfed in mystery and go largely unnoticed. Missing works, high-profile or not, are seldom recovered.

Sooke meets notorious American art thief Myles Connor, who was once suspected by the FBI of being involved in the 1990 Gardner Museum $500 million heist. However, he had an indisputable alibi: he was in a Chicago jail when the heist occurred. Nonetheless, Connor claims to possess inside knowledge of the heist and Sooke is interested in hearing about it.

Also discussed are the Mafia, who are believed to have stolen 1.5 million pieces of artwork in Italy over the course of 40 years, and the Ghent Altarpiece, which holds the status as being the most frequently stolen artwork of all time.

The Barnes Collection https://watchdocumentaries.com/the-barnes-collection/ https://watchdocumentaries.com/the-barnes-collection/#comments Wed, 01 Aug 2012 23:00:00 +0000 https://watchdocumentaries.com/?p=4095 The world of private art collection has always been as glamorous as it has been controversial. In 2012, Albert C. Barnes’s extensive private collection was made available to the public the first time, granting the public access to more than three thousand pieces by artists including Matisse, Cezanne, Renoir, and Picasso.

The Barnes Collection follows Albert C. Barnes in his rise from everyday working man to renowned art collector and controversial figure. The film also follows the efforts of art historians, designers, and construction experts as they work to create a place where the Barnes collection can be displayed to the public.

As The Barnes Collection traces both sides of the eponymous collection’s history and status, it provides a glimpse into the exclusive world of collection and the art lovers who work to bring each piece to the public in direct opposition to Barnes’s last will.

The World’s Most Expensive Paintings https://watchdocumentaries.com/the-worlds-most-expensive-paintings/ https://watchdocumentaries.com/the-worlds-most-expensive-paintings/#respond Fri, 08 Jul 2011 23:00:00 +0000 https://watchdocumentaries.com/the-worlds-most-expensive-paintings/ There is a fascinating connection between art and money. Paintings may exalt the spirit, but they’re also high-end luxury items. Whatever other worth it may have, artwork is a commodity, desired and exchanged by the wealthy and powerful, for prestige and stature.

Paintings accumulate value as though by miracle. A low-cost scrap of canvas, which serves no practical purpose, can become extremely expensive with the wave of a brush. But how, precisely, is it-done? And what is it about art that captivates the ultra-rich? Art critic Alastair Sooke investigates the most expensive paintings to ever sell at auctions, uncovering the stories behind their astronomical prices.
