The individuals deported were sent to El Salvador’s Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT), a prison notorious for its harsh conditions, including severe overcrowding, inadequate medical care, and credible allegations of abuse. Human rights organizations have long criticized the facility, pointing out that it violates international standards for the humane treatment of prisoners. While it is essential to address gang violence and protect public safety, doing so by violating fundamental human rights and bypassing due process is both unethical and unlawful. Everyone, regardless of their alleged crimes, has the right to a fair legal process and humane treatment. Deporting individuals without proper trials or opportunities to contest their removal undermines the core principles of justice. We cannot claim to uphold the rule of law while simultaneously ignoring it when it suits political agendas. Taking shortcuts to achieve security only erodes the very legal standards that make a just society possible.
